SSA special roundtable at the Middle East Studies Association Annual Meeting in Boston

18 November 2016: was happy to deliver remarks on confronting the archival challenges posed by the ongoing Syrian conflict at part of a special roundtable organized by Hilary Kalmbach (Sussex) at the Syrian Studies Association’s sectional meeting at this year’s MESA meeting in Boston. The panel, called “Doing Syrian Studies at a time of Crisis,” brought together 4 scholars at various stages of their careers to discuss some of the ways they meet the dual challenge of political instability in the Middle East and financial austerity in the US/UK.

My remarks centered on the potential for radical social history precipitated by the same forces which preclude state archival access. “Combating state-centrism through Manuscript and Memoir” can be accessed here in brief.
